The new deck opens up the house to the garden

The Brief

Standard height French doors and a cramped back verandah did not do justice to either the deeply established garden or the spacious living areas within. The brief was a large deck for entertaining and a landscape solution to bring together the 80’s renovation. Privacy was needed from the apartment block next door as was protection from the hot afternoon sun.

The Design

A new covered and shaded deck with heroic roof brings a massive wow factor.

Generous steps lead out to a paved BBQ area with raised planting beds for shade and screening.

Open pergolas collect the new components together and marry back to the existing house.

By replacing the windows and doors out to the garden and raising their head height the deck and vista are enjoyed from within. This small budget intervention means Living areas are experienced quite differently.

The Result

A whole new living space has been created for this household of entertainers, an unexpected Godsend during Melbourne’s COVID lockdowns.
