Main bedroom with timber lined ceiling and wrap around highlight windows

Description

This project is for a family needing a bit more space.

Details

The first floor renovation has deep eaves to shade the windows.

The Existing

The existing single-storey bungalow had only one bathroom, lacked an area for parents, and needed a family laundry. The windows and pergola connecting the Living areas to the garden were restrictive and introverted. The home also needed shielding from a domineering townhouse development under construction next door.

The steel framed pergola rises up to meet the sloping garden.

The Design

An upstairs wing with a timber lined ceiling and wrap around clerestory windows creates a secluded place for parents with views of the sky.

Privacy screens are perpendicular to the windows creating long views into the garden.

The living areas are opened up to the garden with clean expanses of glazing and a covered pergola rising to meet the slope of the land.

Planning makes economic use of the existing; the living areas seem much bigger and lighter with no increase in the footprint

Client Feedback

From Kelly and Richard:

It was so lovely being in the house over the weekend! The bedroom is such a beautiful space. We are loving waking up to see the sun and all of the different shadows and angles the light creates off of the eaves and windows.

We just want to say that the majority of the credit must go to your great design and management of the project

The Materials

Deep white eaves limit heat gain and protect the building, contrasting sharply against the charred timber cladding and hardwood battens. Timber screens shield the Western sun and create changing shadows across the day.

Privacy Screens

Screening to the new first floor is a town planning requirement protecting neighbors' privacy. Silvertop ash battened screens have been installed at 90 degrees to the bedroom windows, so that one can see out and enjoy the garden aspect and North sun without overlooking adjacent backyards.

Laundry Drying Rack

The drop down drying rack can be pulled up out of reach, and receives North light from the stairwell via a highlight window.
